Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day, a day in which Americans honor a man who helped change the course of history through his activism and his vision for a just society. It’s hard to quantify just how much Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. accomplished in his 39 years, and it’s also difficult to imagine an America without his many powerful writings, sermons and speeches, including his “I Have a Dream” speech. If Dr. King had not taken the time to put his ideas onto paper and done so in time for the March on Washington, then we would have potentially lost one of the most defining moments in American history.
Which brings me to you and I. While we are probably not engaging in tasks that are as significant or far-reaching, we do nevertheless all have important tasks on our respective tables. Have you ever measured how long it takes for you to get important projects completed? Think about that letter you have been dreading to write. Dreading it usually takes much more energy and time than actually writing it. I am always amazed that most of the things that I dread doing will usually take somewhere between 30 minutes to an hour. This post has taken 5 months and 20 minutes to write (5 months of doubting myself, pushing it back, and 20 minutes to actually write and post it).
So remember: if it’s important, get it done! Learn to prioritize your tasks and work on the ones that matter most. Take that first step today!
